The Abortion Doula Project in NYC

Hey all,

If I haven't gushed to any/all of you already, this note is to inform you of the new Abortion Doula Network that's to be set up in the early fall at Bellevue Hospital! My partner-in-choice Mary and I have been working for the past year (off an on) to make this idea become a reality. Needless to say, we're excited! While Bellevue will definitely be implementing the doula program, we have also gotten very positive responses from Mt. Sinai Hospital and Planned Parenthood of NYC, and we're hoping that by the end of the fall we might also be able to have abortion doulas in those clinics as well.

To clarify, an Abortion Doula is there to supply non-judgemental, compassionate support (much like a birth doula) before, during, and after abortion. At present, it will be a volunteer position. The emphasis will be on post-abortion care, though doulas will also be expected to attend the actual abortion procedure, whether it is surgical or medical, as well as provide pre-abortion counseling and assistance. This position will emphasis the tenets of doula care, by providing an open ear, pain management techniques, relaxation methods, and patient advocacy.

So, now, with the project under way, we need you! There are several ways you can help:

***Donate, and/or attend our Fundraiser for Compassionate Choices! (Note: I
I'll send out an event invitation once dates/times/locations are finalized). If you're broke and talented, perform at the fundraiser! Or donate a creation or two for our silent auction! Likewise, if you just have too much crap, we'll happily take it off of your hands for said auction.

***Knowledgeable about abortion, counseling, the doula model of care, holistic healthcare, or any other topic you deem relevant? Do a workshop for our doula training in the early Fall! E-mail LaurenM@protectchoice.org for a workshop application.

***APPLY NOW TO BE AN ABORTION DOULA***
Hells yeah. Please fill out the following application by August 15th. You can email it to LaurenM@protectchoice.org, or MaryM@protectchoice.org.

Would you like me to post this on the Metropolitan Doula Group, or are you a member yourself?

Hi! I am a member, actually, but I was worried that people in that particular community might get catty if they were bothered/offended (as it seems they tend to do). I have also been getting kicked off of the listserve like crazy. I was going to email Stana and Elan tomorrow to ask what they thought about it. What do you think? Would it be a good idea?

If you want lots of applications, so you can pick the best people (or have a wide net for back-ups etc), I would post on the MDG.

One thing you can do to avoid the potential cattiness - set up a little free website, maybe even use this post, but then please erase my comments. Then write something like ot the listserve:

"Dear MDG,

There is a new initiative at the Bellevue Hospital - doula support for women who find themselves undergoing abortions. If you are interested in providing this kind of care, please find the application under the link. I realize this a sensitive and controversial subject, and I hope that pro-choice doulas will follow up on this opportunity. YourName and RelationshipToTheProject".

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. In the meanwhile, if you or anyone else you know is interested in applying, please do! And, of course, spread the word.

I live in Long Island, so while I take clients in the city all the time, I cannot do a volunteering commuting position all the way to Bellevue. I friended your though. ;-)

awesome awesome.

good luck with this project!!! I ran an abortion clinic while doing my doula training, and have long thought that the same principles should apply to both abortion care and birth.

congrats!

I've always wanted to do something like this. Could you give me an idea of how you've gone about organizing it?

That's a really good idea. I wish I'd had that kind of support when I went through it.

i'm sorry you didn't have it. that's part of why we're trying to start this up-- too many people feel unsupported and completely alone. hopefully this can be a way to help.

if you have any suggestions regarding what you feel is exceptionally important for the doulas to know, please feel free to email me. and thank you for being open about your experience here. ::hug::
